SeeAbility’s eye 2 eye Campaign

There are 1.5M people with a learning disability and 1 in 3 are estimated to have a sight problem. These problems too often go undetected because many people are not able to participate in a standard eye test. Consequently their sight deteriorates as does their quality of life. SeeAbility’s eye 2 eye Campaign promotes awareness and importance of good eye health to people with learning and communication difficulties, their support networks and care and optical professionals.

SeeAbility has been working to improve local and national services by highlighting the importance of effective eye health for people with learning disabilities. Our eye 2 eye Development Officers have supported many people to directly access appropriate eye tests, many for the first time in their lives, which can take many months of preparation to ensure that each test is effective and to endorse future eye care.

We provide different levels of support to suit individuals, their support networks and professionals all of which have very different needs. We are also working with the optical profession to train more optometrists in supporting the practice of allocating longer appointment times to carry out an effective eye tests for someone with a learning disability.

We have also recently launched a web site called Look Up (www.lookupinfo.org) which provides information on a variety of subjects, including local optical services, fact-sheets on promoting good eye health and how to make the best out of low vision.
